Summer is the busiest season for moving. It is not hard to imagine why! But we must realize – what works for us, also works for a lot of other people. Summer is the busiest moving season for a reason. To make a potentially busy, stressful time that small bit easier, we have compiled a list of summer moving tips below.

Moving during summer

Many people struggle to figure out which time of year is the best to move. That struggle is understandable. It is a very big decision to make, after all! Every soon-to-be homeowner asks themselves this same question – is summer the best time to buy a house?

For many people, the answer is yes! Many people wait until the end of summer before moving house. The weather is nicer (although a lot hotter), inventory is not as small as it is during winter, and any children in the household will be out of school. For these reasons and others, it is best for many people to move during the summer months.

Hire professional help early

If at all possible, hire any help you’d need as early as you can. Summer is the most popular time of the year to move. The earlier that you move, the more likely you are to actually get the appointments you’d need.

Summer moving costs

This will also make it easier to pay for any increased costs you might face (which is not a problem if you book with UniMovers!). Summer is a very popular time of the year to move, so expect prices to match that increase in popularity. The earlier you book and budget, the easier this will be on your wallet.

Start a summer move early in the day

The later it gets, the hotter it will be. So, a summer move should be started as early as possible in the day. If you can, move the heaviest and biggest things first. This way, the hardest part will be done by the time the sun is directly overhead. This will help you all avoid the worst of the heat and ensure that you finish with plenty of time left in the day. This will give you time to relax and set up your new home.

Bring lots of water

Hydration is key! Make sure to bring plenty of water for everyone. People will probably bring their own water, but there is no such thing as too much drinking water. The heat and humidity will get to you even when you take breaks, let alone when you are actually moving things in the summer heat.

Do you remember the old phrase, “you can bring a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink?” Sometimes having the water there is not enough. Remind everyone to hydrate and take breaks as often as needed.

Dress for the occasion

Wear closed-toe and well-fitted shoes. You will be carrying and shifting a lot of heavy objects. I can’t imagine any good outcomes that would result from tripping while carrying a box of dishes or your half of a heavy couch.

Don’t wear heavy fabrics. This will be a hard and sweaty process no matter what, but I don’t think wearing jeans or sweatpants would help too much. Getting heat exhaustion is not fun, but that risk is very high in summer.

Also, don’t be afraid of sun protection! This can be sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, or anything else you wear when it is really hot outside. Apply sunscreen before you start the process, and re-apply it every 30 minutes to 1 hour as needed.
