Different Types of Moving Boxes:

There are lots of different types of moving boxes to choose from. This list will help you understand the different options and help you decide which one is right for you. Moving boxes near you are easy to find at big box stores, local retail stores, and online marketplaces.

Cardboard Boxes:

It is always recommended to have small, medium, and large cardboard boxes during a move. These are great for packing anything from kitchen appliances and books to bedding and pillows.

Cardboard boxes are the cheapest option. You can often find them for free on Facebook Marketplace or you can purchase a variety pack from Amazon.

Plastic Bins:

Plastic bins are great for packing bulky clothing, lamps, and other decorative items.
We recommend using clear bins so you can safely store your items but also easily find them.

Plastic bins can be found at big box stores such as Home Depot or The Container Store. Amazon also sells a six-pack of large clear boxes.

Bankers Boxes:

Bankers Boxes are just cardboard boxes with handles and removable tops. They are especially helpful when moving important documents or small delicate items.

These boxes can be found in any big box stores or local retailers that sell moving supplies. Walmart sells a 10-pack which is perfect for moving a small office.

Wooden Crates:

If you have to move any heavy-duty or delicate items, such as art sculptures or paintings, consider getting some wooden crates.

They tend to be more expensive and the price varies on durability as well as size. You can find various options at big box stores like Home Depot or Walmart.

Kitchenware Boxes:

If you need cardboard boxes that include dividers to separate and hold dishes, you have a couple of options.

If you already have boxes, Amazon sells a variety pack of inserts that can be used to separate your kitchen items. OR you can simply purchase “kitchenware boxes” from any big box store, such as Home Depot.

Flat Panel TV Box:

If you are willing to spend the extra money, a TV box will absolutely ensure the safe transport of your TV.

The cost for a flat panel box depends on the size of your TV. They can be found at any big box store, such as Home Depot. Amazon also sells a pack of five boxes

Mattress Box:

Not essential, but worth the extra cost if you are worried about just using a plastic mattress bag.

Mattress boxes are a little harder to find and their price varies depending on size. I would recommend searching for “mattress moving boxes near me” for the best results.

Amount of Boxes Needed:

Now that you know your options, you are probably wondering how many boxes do I actually need?

Home Depot offers a “Moving Supplies Calculator” which is a great place to get started. But it’s best to trust your instinct in the end since they are trying to sell you as much as possible!

The average amount of cardboard boxes needed for a one-bedroom unit is around 10-12 of each size. A three-bedroom unit would need triple this.

Consider your items and what you are equipped to handle.

  • It might be better for you to get more small boxes than large ones because it will be easier for you to carry.
  • You might consider getting only large and medium boxes so you have fewer boxes to move.
  • Decide if you have any items that you would prefer to be stored in a safer box, such as a plastic box.
  • Don’t forget about vacuum seal bags! They will save you so much room.

Transporting Moving Boxes:

Finally, now that you are all packed up you are probably wondering how am I going to physically move these boxes?

Uhaul offers them for an affordable price. Additionally, when renting from Uhaul you can also rent equipment such as a dolly or felt pads. From personal experience, using a dolly will make the whole process much easier.
